About this product
This plate comes from Tamegroute, a small village in the south of Morocco. The craft of making Tamegroute pottery is known only to seven families there, each of whom has their own kiln and workshop. The plate is handmade and glazed using centuries-old techniques, so no two pieces are the same.
Features
- Handmade Moroccan pottery from Tamegroute
- Glaze containing silicon, manganese, and copper, fired in earthen kilns
- Bubbles, scratches, color variations, and small blemishes in the glaze are part of the handmade process
- Characteristic three-point scarring from stacking in the kiln
Frequently asked questions
Where does the color of Tamegroute pottery come from?
The glaze contains silicon, manganese, and a small amount of copper. That copper gives Tamegroute pottery its famous green tint. If the copper is replaced by iron oxide, the color becomes more brown or olive green.
Why are there three small marks on the plate?
The kilns are small, so the pieces are stacked on top of each other using separators at three points. This leaves the characteristic scar that you see on almost every Tamegroute piece.
